COLLEGES OF PHYSICIANS & SURGEONS

(Identical letter sent to Colleges in various provinces by local resident)

August ___, 2002

Dr. ___________, Registrar
College of Physicians & Surgeons of (name of province)

Dear Dr. ____________:

Earlier this year the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Saskatchewan launched an initiative aimed at raising awareness of the issue of routine infant male circumcision. As a first step the college issued a memo to its members cautioning them that routine circumcision of newborn males is not good medical practice. The memo advises physicians to "respectfully decline to perform the procedure." A copy of the memo is enclosed with this letter.

Since the issue of infant male circumcision is of concern to me, I would be interested in hearing the __________ college's opinion of the Saskatchewan memo. Specifically, I would appreciate answers to the following questions:

  1. Does the College of Physicians & Surgeons of __________ share the concerns of its Saskatchewan counterpart with respect to neonatal circumcision?

  2. Is it desirable to have a uniform standard of practice across the country?

  3. Will the __________ college be following Saskatchewan's lead in advising physicians not to perform neonatal circumcision?
I would appreciate responses to the above questions at your earliest convenience. Thank you for taking the time to consider this issue.

Sincerely yours,

[signed]
