WHO WE ARE
The matter of infant male circumcision is particularly difficult in regards to human rights, as it involves consideration of the rights of the infant as well as the rights of the parents.
—College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia

The Association for Genital Integrity is a Canadian group committed to raising public awareness of the issues surrounding infant male circumcision. The Association seeks to promote the right of every child to bodily integrity.

Specifically, our goals are

  • to bring the issue of infant male circumcision to the attention of Canadian authorities and the general public;
  • to raise awareness of the discrimination inherent in legislation that prohibits female genital mutilation without providing equal protection to males;
  • to ensure that organizations of medical professionals adopt gender-neutral policies with respect to genital mutilation;
  • to ensure enforcement of existing laws prohibiting non-therapeutic surgery on children;
  • to ensure compliance with international human rights instruments ratified by Canada.
The main spokespersons for the Association are Dr. Arif Bhimji of Sherwood Park, Alberta, and Dennis Harrison of Vancouver, British Columbia.

We appreciate your feedback.

Basic facts:  Infant male circumcision is an irreversible surgical operation. It is not medically required. Performing an irreversible, medically unnecessary operation on a minor is generally viewed as a breach of medical ethics. Medically unnecessary surgery on female genitals is expressly prohibited by the Criminal Code of Canada.
